With the Griz needing a win Saturday to lock up the Big Sky Conference outright crown for the second straight season, it looks like senior guard Will Cherry could return to the floor against Northern Arizona on senior night. Cherry has missed three straight games after re-injuring the same foot he broke back in September.
“He’s really begging Murph,” Montana coach Wayne Tinkle said Friday, referring to Griz athletic trainer Dennis Murphy. “What we’re trying to make sure is that it’s not just a senior night deal. If he can help us and he’s not at any further risk, then we’ll start him and probably control his playing time. I think Murph is going to do some more exercises with him today and see how it goes.”
Cherry dressed and participated in pregame warmups before Montana’s 63-52 win over Sac State on Thursday that clinched no worse than a tie for the league title.
“Last night we just thought it would be good for him to suit up and get a little extra workout in warm-ups, it wasn’t a ploy,” Tinkle said. “I even told Coach (Brian) Katz before the game that Will’s not playing, we just want him to go through the workout.”
