Montana’s leading scorer, senior forward Mathias Ward, will miss Saturday’s game at Davidson because of an injury. How much additional time he’ll miss is still up in the air.
“He’s out for the near future, but we don’t know how long yet,” Griz coach Wayne Tinkle said.
The Griz will go with their three-guard starting lineup – Will Cherry, Kareem Jamar and Jordan Gregory – along with center Eric Hutchison and forward Spencer Coleman to start. Against a tall Davidson team that features 6-foot-10 Jake Cohen and 6-7 De’Mon Brooks, guys like Kevin Henderson, Andy Martin and even Jake Wiley may see more playing time in Ward’s absence.
“Obviously, it’s quite a big chunk; he’s our leading scorer, one of our most experienced players,” Tinkle said. “We’re going to be a little smaller than normal, but it might allow us to be more mobile. We can play with four guards out there. His physical presence defensively and his play-making ability we’re going to miss. Other guys are going to have to step up.”
After Saturday, the Griz finish up Big Sky play with road games at Montana State and Southern Utah, followed by home games against Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. If the Griz win out, they’ll host the league tournament for the second straight year.
