The University of Montana administration needs to get on the stick and put a new three-year contract on the desk of men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle, whose current three-year deal expires on June 30.
During his current three-year contract, Tinkle’s teams have a combined record of 66-27 (37-11 in Big Sky games). The Griz have captured the league’s postseason title once in that time and recently wrapped up their first outright regular-season title since 1992. He has recruited players who combine talent with good character; they’ve stayed out of trouble and, for the most part, have earned their degrees.
With that kind of success on and off the court, it’s only a matter of time before another school comes calling, like Fresno State did a year ago.
You couldn’t ask for a better ambassador for the university as a whole. Given the public relations black eyes the school has suffered recently, here’s an opportunity to reward a guy who does things the right way.
